3-D Secure stands for "Three-Domain Secure". The three domains are: - Acquirer domain (the bank and the merchant to which the money is being paid).
- Issuer domain (the bank which issued the card being used).
- Interoperability domain (the infrastructure provided by the card scheme, credit, debit, prepaid or other types of a payment card, to support the 3-D Secure protocol). It includes the Internet, merchant plug-in, access control server, and other software providers
Valid names are: - Common 3-D Secure: 3-D Secure, 3DS
- 3-D Secure 1.x: 3DS1
- 3-D Secure 2.x: EMV 3DS, 3DS2, 3DS v2.1.0, 3DS v2.2.0
3-D Secure 1.0 has been started in 2000 and 3-D Secure 2.x has been started in 2019. The card holder has to enroll the credit card at the issuer for 3-D Secure. The big differences that came up with 3-D Secure 2.x are: - Strong Customer Authentication (SCA)
- Support for biometric authentication
- Option for frictionless authentication, i.e. authentication without customer challenge

3-D Secure 1.0 wurde im Jahr 2000 und 3-D Secure 2.x im Jahr 2019 gestartet. Der Karteninhaber muss die Kreditkarte bei der kartenausgebenden Bank (Issuer) für 3-D Secure registrieren. Die wesentlichen Neuerungen mit 3-D Secure 2.x sind: - Starke Kundenauthentifizierung (SCA)
- Unterstützung für biometrische Authentifizierung
- Option für "frictionless" Authentifizierung, d.h. Authentifizierung ohne Challenge
